I Was More Than an Intern During My Summer Consulting Internship at L.E.K.

I had a fantastic internship experience as a summer consultant with L.E.K. Consulting. The internship program at L.E.K. sets the bar high – for both graduate students and rising undergraduate seniors. Now after completing two full cases, I am happy to share why I chose to spend my summer at L.E.K. and how L.E.K. exceeded my expectations.

The internship began with an intensive, one-week training program on Cape Cod. The entire U.S. internship class, both graduate and undergraduate students, was given a crash-course of training throughout the week – with plenty of time for networking with new colleagues and veteran L.E.K. staff. We covered everything from consulting basics to communication, presentation skills and case management. By the end of the week, all the interns had stepped through an entire case from proposal to final presentation.

After training, each member of the internship class was assigned to a case (allocated based on desired industry preference). I felt like a valuable member of the team right from the start - not just an intern. I was given an entire work stream and—armed with the tools from our training—was able to hit the ground running. I also frequently leveraged concepts I learned during first year business school, which enabled me to have a meaningful impact on the case. Fortunately, interns were able to experience multiple cases throughout the summer, giving most of us exposure to multiple industries, case objectives and clients.

Outside of case work, each intern was paired with a career development coach and a “buddy,” which emulates the full-time experience. Both resources enabled interns to have candid discussions regarding the summer experience, general career progression at L.E.K., how to manage work-life balance and everything else in between. In addition to those resources, L.E.K. sponsored tons of thoughtful and fun activities for each of the US offices. From industry 101 panels hosted by managing directors and thought-leaders to socials and outings in the city, there were abundant activities that enabled the class to get to know L.E.K. better.

As I reflect on my summer, I can’t speak highly enough about my L.E.K. experience. The people are incredibly friendly, supportive, and driven. From town hall meetings to company outings (yes, we rented yachts and sailed around Newport, RI for a day…), it’s hard to imagine a better environment to interact with intelligent people and experience management consulting firsthand.
