I joined L.E.K. as an Associate in the Sydney office a little over a year ago and there hasn’t been a dull moment since. In between working on the most interesting cases, the year has been peppered with a multitude of social initiatives, community engagement activities and office get-togethers.
Situated near Sydney’s Circular Quay in the central business area, the office affords us beautiful views of Sydney Harbour and the Royal Botanic Gardens. The rose garden is a favorite lunch time haunt where, more often than not, you can enjoy the sunshine even in the middle of winter.
In an office of nearly 60 people, it is easy to get to know and quickly befriend everyone. The kitchen “Hub” space is where all of the action is. Whether it’s eating lunch together and collaborating over the daily crossword, racing in to eat leftover sandwiches and cakes from client meetings, or enjoying a drink, The Hub holds very fond memories for staff.
Our active social club, The Ministry of Fun (MoF), organizes events such as kayaking, pasta-making classes or a Sydney Harbour cruise every month or so. The 2016 cohort of seven new Associates was recently welcomed into the family with an escape-room challenge and some friendly bowling (luckily everyone escaped and was back in the office on Monday morning).
One of the unique aspects of L.E.K. Australia is our community involvement. I was surprised to see how active we were in this area when I first started. In addition to hosting an annual Charity Trivia night and volunteering for Christmas hamper packing, the Community Engagement Committee (CEC) partners with various non-profits to organize a half-day of volunteering to help them crack a problem.
In April, we worked with the Kokoda Track Foundation, a charity focusing on advancing the lives of those in Papua New Guinea. We put our well-trained phone interviewing skills to good use to outline the impact of their Archer Scholarships Program, for the purpose of securing government funding. It is truly heartwarming to see that not only do we deliver impact for our clients, but we can help produce impact for important social initiatives.
L.E.K.’s commitment to training and career acceleration was something that greatly attracted me to the firm. Back to the Office Day (BTTOD) is something we consider sacred and this view has not wavered over the year I have been here. The last Friday of every month is dedicated to upskilling, and whether it be a professional development on technical skills, discussions on strategy or presentations with alumni speakers, every effort is made for all consulting staff to attend. It is everyone’s favorite day—and the bacon and egg breakfast and free lunch makes it even sweeter!
There’s always something happening in the L.E.K. Sydney office—and we’re always creating well-rounded careers for those who take us on!
