In college, a lot of the professors would say that half of learning occurs inside of the classroom, while the other half occurs outside of the classroom. I think the same is true for L.E.K. – nearly half of what I’ve learned has been outside of my casework, through conversations with peers and mentors and through the vast array of “extracurricular” opportunities provided to L.E.K. employees.
One way to experience “outside of the case” opportunities is through our community involvement. On one recent Saturday, 50+ L.E.K. employees went to the Pine Street Inn, a homeless shelter in downtown Boston that sleeps nearly 500 homeless individuals each night. The shelter has an elaborate kitchen operation that provides about 2,000 meals to Boston’s homeless each day. L.E.K. donated a massive amount of carrots, celery, potatoes, onions, and more and engaged in a “chop-a-thon” preparing all of the vegetables for cooking. The experience was quite special because it provided us with the opportunity to see first-hand the complex operation of caring for our city’s homeless.
Another example is through athletic activities sponsored by L.E.K. Recently, staff have developed a series of health-focused evening activities. On Monday nights, for instance, L.E.K. rents out a studio in a gym across the street from our office. We alternate Yoga Mondays and Spinning Mondays, where instructors (sometimes L.E.K. employees!) teach classes. It is a great way to get out of the office and do something active with coworkers. In addition to the Monday offerings, we also have Tuesday Trot, a weekly running club, and L.E.K. intramural Basketball and Softball teams.
