L.E.K.'s NYC Consultants take on Young Women in Bio Panel Event
On May 6th, women from L.E.K. Consulting’s New York City office participated in a panel discussion for Young Women in Bio (YWIB), “Consulting Careers with STEM Backgrounds.” YWIB is a special initiative designed to introduce and inspire middle- and high school-age girls to careers in STEM.
Approximately 30 young women (including two charmingly inquisitive fifth graders) and several graduate students attended the ninety minute panel. Consultant Martha H., Associate Consultant Karishma D., and Life Sciences Specialist Laura W. represented L.E.K. on the panel, alongside consultants from Boston Consulting Group and Bionest Partners. The purpose of the event was to introduce young women to careers in life sciences, healthcare, and biotech consulting. Questions of the panelists included, “How are the clients and types of cases different in large, medium, and boutique firms?” “What does a typical day look like for a consultant?” and “How does being a woman affect your career in consulting?” Attendees were especially interested to hear about the decisions the panelists made to choose specific majors or to leave medical practices or laboratory research.
YWIB events serve to ignite girls’ interest in biotech while fostering a business and entrepreneurial spirit. The main way YWIB achieves this objective is to organize tours of companies and facilities to give the participants a sense of available career opportunities and what the pursuit of science can involve. Past events have included visits to the biotech incubator Harlem Biospace, the global science publisher John Wiley & Sons, NYU Langone’s breast cancer research laboratories and Roche Pharmaceuticals’ Innovation Center in NYC.
Women in Bio (WIB), the parent organization of YWIB, has chapters in twelve major metropolitan areas, and serves as a connector and networking facilitator for professional women in biotechnology. Members enjoy professional development events, networking events, and periodic lectures from a diverse set of industry leaders.
