My Summer Consulting Internship as an Undergrad

I’m an associate in L.E.K. Consulting’s Boston office, and started in September 2012 after participating in the L.E.K. summer associate internship program during my junior summer at Boston College. Looking for internships my junior year, I was (as I’m sure many of you are) unsure about which career path to take. I thought consulting might be an interesting field, and was brought to the L.E.K. school information session by a friend and (now fellow) co-worker. The more I researched L.E.K. and learned about the firm’s professional and personal opportunities, the more I thought it would be a great place to start my career and grow as a professional. I’m happy to say I was right!

From Intern to Associate: My Experience at L.E.K. Melbourne

I can still remember, with perfect clarity, the nervous ride up the lift to the L.E.K. Melbourne office for my first round Summer Associate interview in August 2011. A third year Commerce student, I was nonetheless new to the world of management consulting. Consulting had been suggested to me as a career that I might be well suited to, and L.E.K. was recommended as a great firm to look into. A little research indicated that consulting work did seem interesting, and L.E.K. sounded like a good firm.

There's No Such Thing as a Typical Route into Consulting

It’s the first day of ‘Orientation’ and I’m one of fifty new Associates from across L.E.K.’s European offices that have gathered in a hotel conference centre for the start of our introduction to L.E.K. The first thing that strikes me is the diversity of backgrounds that my peer group has. We have people straight out of an undergraduate degree, people who have just submitted their PhDs, and people who are coming to L.E.K. from other city careers… and me.

My Experience as a L.E.K. Associate in Australia

A friend and fellow engineering student first introduced me to L.E.K. by taking me to the graduate recruitment talk at my university. The people and the work seemed interesting and outside the realm of careers I had considered before. I was further encouraged to apply by a few New Zealanders in various L.E.K. offices and was excited by the prospect of a challenging interview process and a trip to Sydney!

Breaking Down the Summer Consultant Interview Process

Former L.E.K. summer intern Bryan L. outlines the interview process

While I am currently a Consultant (post-MBA position) in L.E.K.’s Boston office, my career at L.E.K. began during the summer of 2010 when I was a Summer Consultant between my two years at business school.
